Elbow Pain

What is elbow pain?

Elbow pain is regarded as pain that is located at or around the elbow joint. It is also sometimes regarded as Golfer’s elbow and Tennis Elbow depending on the location of the pain spot.

Signs and Symptoms

• Pain upon movement or touch
• Swelling around the joint area
• Soreness or radiation at or around the elbow area.
• Limited range of motion

What causes Elbow pain?

There are many causes of elbow pain. Despite the common belief, most pain at the elbow can be a referred pain from the neck due to cervical spondylosis. With that being said, it is also relatively common to get an actual elbow sprain from sporting activities such as golf, badminton, tennis, and also heavy lifting.

Natural History

Elbow pain can be triggered during a sporting activity or sudden movements that put excessive pressure on the elbow. As mentioned above, it could be a nerve pain triggered by a neck sprain from a sports event too. The pain can be sharp and intense in the initial stages and gradually decrease over time. It is important to note that it is easier to re-injure or sprain the damaged joint repeatedly if left untreated. The joint will deteriorate and bone spur might develop as time goes by.

Whom does it affect?

As the name suggests, most people get elbow injuries while doing extreme sports or repetitive sports such as racket sports, golf, heavy lifting, etc. Most sports demand a lot from them which may lead to a sprain if not careful.

Chiropractic can certainly help with elbow pain! Our team of Gonstead Chiropractors provides elbow pain treatments just like how we would to other joints in the body. Headaches and Migraine

Headaches and migraines are a condition where there is pain, tension, and discomfort that occurs at the region of the head. In a busy city like Kuala Lumpur, it is common for people to get disoriented due to work. Long hours of sitting is a major contribution to headaches and migraines. It can be very disruptive to our daily lives. Some headaches can last for hours, days, weeks, even recurring for years.

Signs and Symptoms

  • A tension-like feeling surrounding the temples of the head
  • A pulsating, throbbing pain on one side of the head
  • A heavy feeling on the back or the side of the heads
  • Pain at the frontal area of the head and discomfort when looking at bright lights

What causes Headaches and Migraines?

There are many causes of headaches and migraines and one of the most common causes are due to  nerve pressure caused by dysfunction of the spine. Typically, dysfunction of the spine is due to a swollen intervertebral disc. Trauma, overuse injuries, bad sitting posture, bad lifting technique, and the day-to-day wear and tear are the reason to blame.

Natural History

Headaches and migraines can usually start as slight discomfort or tension in the head, which could then progressively worsen to the point that it might interfere with one’s daily life or work. One would normally consume painkillers to alleviate the pain, but it is only temporary relief and not a permanent solution. If the root cause is left untreated, it may worsen and last for many years.

Who does it affect?

Headaches and migraines can affect anyone of any age, but it is more common amongst teenagers and working adults. It tends to be more common in females rather than males. Recent studies suggest that 1 in every 20 adults suffer from frequent headaches and 1 in every 7 adults suffers from recurrent migraine if left untreated.

Can Chiropractic help?

We wouldn’t go as far as to call ourselves migraine specialists but we have certainly helped a lot of our patients with headaches and migraines with specific Chiropractic spinal adjustments in the past. So, some patients refer to us as migraine specialists in Kuala Lumpur.

In Aligned, our Gonstead Chiropractors perform a thorough examination process to determine the cause of the headache or migraine to correct it.

Back Pain icon
Back Pain

What is back pain ?

Back pain is regarded as pain, soreness, or tiredness in the lower back region or middle back region. It is commonly regarded as a “muscle pain” or stiffness at the low back. This is due to the muscle spasm caused by nerve irritation when there’s a mechanical injury in the lower back. Most people will experience low back pain at least once in their lifetime and it can occur at any age especially.

Signs and symptoms

• Sharp pain around the lower/middle back.
• Soreness and pulling sensation around the lower/middle back.
• Numbness and tingling
• Tiredness and fatigue
• Stiffness in the morning

What causes back pain ?

The vertebrae in our spine can be misaligned due to repetitive stress or injuries. This condition is otherwise known as subluxation. When there’s a subluxation, the intervertebral disc will swell up and irritate the nerves around the area. When the nerve is affected, the muscles surrounding that region will likely go into spasm, causing tightness and discomfort.
Certain factors that could contribute to lower back pain include;
• Sitting for long periods
• Incorrect technique while carrying heavy object off the floor
• Had a previous fall or car accident.
• Incorrect exercise technique.

Whom does it affect?

Back pain can affect people of all ages. However, it is more commonly seen amongst people of the age 30 and above. Back pain is very common amongst office workers who lead a sedentary and inactive life.

Natural History

Back pain can begin as very mild discomfort that may come and go in intervals. If it is left untreated, the pain can get increasingly uncomfortable over time. Certain people might also experience sudden sharp pain after waking up in the morning, carrying a heavy object which can come as an intense pain that may limit simple movements.

Scoliosis is a medical condition where there is sideways curvature and rotation on its vertical axis of the spine. This most often occurs during a person’s growth spurt during puberty and generally worsens over a period of 2-3 years. The word scoliosis comes from a Greek word that stands for crooked. In most cases, scoliosis can cause pain and discomfort to certain areas of the spine such as the lower back, middle back, and neck areas.

Signs and Symptoms?

• A crooked “s-shaped” spine when looking from the back
• Uneven shoulder height
• Uneven pelvic tilt
• Unequal leg length
• Commonly comes with back pain

What causes scoliosis?

There can be many possible causes of scoliosis. It could either be congenital or post-traumatic. In the event of physical trauma, it is common for the subluxation to occur at the pelvis. The misaligned pelvis is a common reason that causes uneven leg length which then results in a scoliotic looking spine.

Natural History

Scoliosis most commonly occurs during the growing age of 10-15 years old. During this stage, our growth plates are still developing and it is more susceptible to injury from contact sports, falling, and quick sudden movements. If there’s any damage to the growth plates, it might potentially stunt the growth of the bone, causing an uneven development of the bone and causing pain to the back. Proper treatment for scoliosis at the initial stage is important to prevent this condition from worsening. If left untreated, the degree of curvature might worsen and the discomfort might increase over time.

Whom does it affect?

Scoliosis is commonly present in both teenagers and also adults. However, scoliosis most commonly occurs during the growth phase and affects females more than males in a ratio of 3:1.

Can Chiropractic help?

Chiropractors are the most preferred healthcare professionals to provide scoliosis treatment to the patients by using specific spinal adjustments as solutions. The majority of these patients may experience misalignments in the spine which may lead to pain and discomfort in their daily activities. In Aligned, we provide scoliosis treatment to the patients in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Signs and Symptoms

• Radiating pain at the buttock, back of the thigh, or the calf
• Numbness at the back of the buttock, back of the thigh, or the calf.
• Burning sensation at the back of the buttock, back of the thigh, or the calf.
• Pins and needles at the back of the buttock, back of the thigh, or the calf.

What causes Sciatica?

There are a few causes of sciatica, one of the most common causes of sciatica is the misalignment in the lumbar spine or the pelvis which leads to inflammation that causes swelling along the joint which aggravates or “pinches” the nerves that exit from the spine.

Natural History

Sciatica can start as lower back tightness or soreness which progressively worsen over time. In the majority of the cases, due to the intense pain of sciatica, most often the patient will mistake it as a leg problem because the lower back pain is relatively mild in comparison. Sciatica usually progresses by having discomfort or pain at the buttock which can travel to the back of the thigh, and around the calf. It can either affect either side of the leg or both legs together at once.

Whom does it affect?

Sciatica can affect people of various walks of life and different ages. However, it is very common amongst office workers and people who live a sedentary lifestyle. Excessive sitting and inactivity can increase the amount of load in the lower back and pelvis which could lead to sciatica.

Knee Pain icon
Knee Pain

What is knee pain?

Knee pain is often described as a sharp, achy, pulling, or burning pain at or around one or both knees. It can either be episodic or persistent depending on the situation.
Knee pain can be a result of injuries from sports, repeated stress on the knee, misaligned pelvis, nerve pain, tendinopathy, and even arthritis.

Signs and Symptoms

• Swelling and stiffness in the knee
• Popping or Crunching in the knee
• Pulling at the back of the knee
• Inability to straighten the knee
• Pain when walking up or down the stairs.

What causes knee pain?

There are many causes of knee pain, one of the most common causes are misalignments in the pelvis and the sacrum (tailbone). Our hip joint forms a connection between the lower limb and the pelvic girdle. When there is a misaligned bone at the pelvic girdle, it can upset the balance of the structure, causing a change in bio-mechanic and weight distribution to the knee. This can result in a change in gait pattern thus causing wear and tear at the knee over time.
A “pinched” nerve could also cause a pulling or sore sensation at or around the knee area, as the nerves that supply the knee and the leg originate from the pelvis and lower back.

Natural History

Knee pain can affect either one or both knees. Knee pain due to a particular injury often only affects one knee, whereas misalignments in the pelvis or lumbar spine can cause pain in both knees. As time passes, the pain in the knee might be intensified as the wear and tear in the knee joint is increasing due to improper mechanics or use of the knee. Hence, it is detrimental to find the cause of the knee pain as early as possible.

Whom does it affect?

Knee pain can affect people of all ages, from athletes, office workers, to older people. Most people above the age of 50 have some form of chronic osteoarthritis, especially overweight individuals. Whereas, young athletes with knee pain often got acute knee pain from contact sports.

Can Chiropractic help?

Chiropractors have been regarded as the preferred healthcare professionals to provide a non-invasive and effective knee pain treatment in Malaysia.

Slipped Disc icon
Slipped Disc

What is a slipped disc?

Herniated disc or more commonly known as a slipped disc, is a condition in which people relate with long-standing back pain and numbness down the legs/hands.
Our spine is made up of bones with cartilages in between them which are in the shape of a disc. These discs in our spine are very important as they allow us to move our spine and act as the shock absorber of our spine when we go through daily activities such as walking and sitting.
These discs could be damaged and protrude out to compress the surrounding nerves, causing pain and inflammation.

Signs and Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of someone who has a slipped disc may vary from person to person.

• Numbness in one or both legs
• Numbness in one or both hands
• Pain along the back, front or side of the thigh and calves
• Tingling, aching, or burning sensation in the lower back, buttock region, or legs
• A pulling sensation down one or both the legs
• Unexplained muscle weakness

What causes a herniated disc?

There are many possible causes for a slipped disc, the most common are ;

• Lifting a heavy object such as a box, off the floor
• A very high physically demanding occupation
• A lot of repetitive bending and twisting of the lower back.

When a segment in the spine is under repetitive stress, such as repetitive bending and twisting, it can compress the disc which causes the content of the disc to protrude outwards. When the contents of the disc protrudes outwards, it could then potentially irritate the nerves along the spine which causes pain and discomfort.

Natural History

The severity of a herniated disc may worsen over time. Some people might find that consuming painkillers or NSAIDS may help with the pain and symptoms, however, that is just a temporary solution.
With a damaged disc in your spine, the function of a particular segment in your spine is compromised, however, your body will still demand normal function from it for various daily life activities which could potentially damage it further.
Many patients tend to ignore the initial signs and symptoms of a herniated disc and only proceed to seek treatment when the pain is unbearable.

Who does it affect?

The incidence of a herniated disc is about 5 to 20 cases per 1000 adults annually and is most common in people 30-50 years old. The most common areas that are affected are the Neck and the Lower back (Cervical and Lumbar spine).

Can Chiropractic help?

At Aligned we provide slipped disc or herniated disc treatment by delivering specific Chiropractic adjustments. Many people around Kuala Lumpur have been in search of slipped disc treatment, only to find their solution with our practitioners who are experienced and have dealt with many cases of a slipped disc or herniated disc.

Who does it affect?

Neck pain affects mostly office workers who work on computers and phones for long periods. It also commonly affects people requiring awkward neck positions for a long period, such as surgeons, dentists, or even beauticians.
