WHAT WE TREAT

Knee Pain Treatment

What is Knee pain?

Knee pain is often described as a sharp, achy, pulling, or burning pain at or around one or both knees. It can either be episodic or persistent depending on the situation.

Knee pain can be a result of injuries from sports, repeated stress on the knee, misaligned pelvis, nerve pain, tendinopathy, and even arthritis.

Signs and symptoms

Swelling and stiffness in the knee
Popping or Crunching in the knee
Pulling at the back of the knee
Inability to straighten the knee
Pain when walking up or down the stairs.

What causes Knee pain ?

There are many causes of knee pain, one of the most common causes are misalignments in the pelvis and the sacrum (tailbone). Our hip joint forms a connection between the lower limb and the pelvic girdle. When there is a misaligned bone at the pelvic girdle, it can upset the balance of the structure, causing a change in bio-mechanic and weight distribution to the knee. This can result in a change in gait pattern thus causing wear and tear at the knee over time.

A “pinched” nerve could also cause a pulling or sore sensation at or around the knee area, as the nerves that supply the knee and the leg originate from the pelvis and lower back.

Natural History

Knee pain can affect either one or both knees. Knee pain due to a particular injury often only affects one knee, whereas misalignments in the pelvis or lumbar spine can cause pain in both knees. As time passes, the pain in the knee might be intensified as the wear and tear in the knee joint is increasing due to improper mechanics or use of the knee. Hence, it is detrimental to find the cause of the knee pain as early as possible.

Whom does it affect?

Knee pain can affect people of all ages, from athletes, office workers, to older people. Most people above the age of 50 have some form of chronic osteoarthritis, especially overweight individuals. Whereas, young athletes with knee pain often got acute knee pain from contact sports.
