WHAT WE TREAT

Scoliosis Treatment

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a medical condition where there is sideways curvature and rotation on its vertical axis of the spine. This most often occurs during a person’s growth spurt during puberty and generally worsens over a period of 2-3 years. The word scoliosis comes from a Greek word that stands for crooked. In most cases, scoliosis can cause pain and discomfort to certain areas of the spine such as the lower back, middle back, and neck areas.

Signs and symptoms

A crooked “s-shaped” spine when looking from the back
Uneven shoulder height
Uneven pelvic tilt
Unequal leg length
Commonly comes with back pain

What causes scoliosis ?

There can be many possible causes of scoliosis. It could either be congenital or post-traumatic. In the event of physical trauma, it is common for the subluxation to occur at the pelvis. The misaligned pelvis is a common reason that causes uneven leg length which then results in a scoliotic looking spine.

Natural History

Scoliosis most commonly occurs during the growing age of 10-15 years old. During this stage, our growth plates are still developing and it is more susceptible to injury from contact sports, falling, and quick sudden movements. If there’s any damage to the growth plates, it might potentially stunt the growth of the bone, causing an uneven development of the bone and causing pain to the back. Proper treatment for scoliosis at the initial stage is important to prevent this condition from worsening. If left untreated, the degree of curvature might worsen and the discomfort might increase over time.

Whom does it affect?

Scoliosis is commonly present in both teenagers and also adults. However, scoliosis most commonly occurs during the growth phase and affects females more than males in a ratio of 3:1.
